Essential Question
How should the resources of rainforests be used and preserved?
Overview
In this lesson, students learn about six groups that have competing interests in how to preserve and use the resources of the Amazon rainforest. They create and present short news reports about these groups. Students discuss a series of questions that force them to evaluate each group’s ideas and then propose their own ideas for how to reconcile those competing interests.
Objectives
Students will
• identify the groups that have an interest in the preservation or use of the resources of the Amazon rainforest.
• analyze and discuss a series of questions to help them understand the competing viewpoints of these various groups.
• investigate ideas from around the world about how to address land use conflict in the rainforest and determine which would be most applicable to the Amazon region.
Geoterms
Students will define and explain the importance of these key geographic terms: biodiversity, carbon-oxygen cycle, deforestation, sustainable development, tropical rainforest, clear cut, ecotourism, environmentalist, reforestation, land use conflict.
Suggested time: This lesson will take approximately 1.5 weeks
