Chapter 5
Overview
Students explore the debate surrounding urban sprawl by making recommendations about how to best address impending growth in three urban areas: Portland, Toronto, and Atlanta. Within their groups, each student expresses their opinion about how to deal with urban sprawl. Groups debate possible urban sprawl policies and prepare policy recommendations before learning how each city actually dealt with sprawl. Finally, students develop a plan to deal with urban sprawl in an area near them.

• analyze the causes of, consequences of, and various solutions to urban sprawl.
• identify the effects of urban sprawl policies implemented in three North American cities.
• analyze the implications of global urban patterns and international solutions to sprawl.
