How do American consumption patterns affect people and the planet?
Overview
This chapter introduces students to consumption patterns in the United States and around the world. Students analyze a series of four cartograms depicting global consumption patterns and gross domestic product and identify reasons for those patterns. They then use what they have learned to make predictions about future challenges posed by the growing global consumer class.
Objectives
Students will
• demonstrate an ability to read and interpret cartograms.
• identify current consumption patterns in the United States.
• compare U.S. consumption patterns with those of other countries around the world.
• evaluate the effects and predict the future impact of growing levels of consumerism.

Students will define and explain the importance of these key geographic terms: Consumption, Developed country, Developing country, Gross domestic product (GDP), per capita, Calories, Fossil fuel, poverty, work ethic, Recycling
