What factors contribute to the success or failure of new nation-states?
Overview
To better understand why political maps can change, students analyze economic and political information about five nation-states that formed after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Students gather information from maps, charts, and their reading to determine which of the five nation-states are most likely to be politically and economically successful. They use this information to recommend one of these nation-states as the most promising site for a future fictitious world games competition.
Objectives
Students will
• identify some major factors that affect whether a nation will succeed or collapse.
• analyze some of the factors that may determine the success of the nation-states that have developed out of the former Soviet Union.
• examine other regions in the world where new nations are forming.
